DB Schenker Wants to Reduce Carbon Emissions and Hapag Lloyd is Happy to Help. Read the full story.

Sustainable partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and DB Schenker.

August | 2023

In a significant move towards advancing sustainable practices in the shipping industry, Hapag-Lloyd has joined forces with DB Schenker to initiate the decarbonization of supply chains. Building upon the recent unveiling of the “Ship Green” initiative this past May, the global logistics leader, DB Schenker, has opted to incorporate Hapag-Lloyd’s innovative sustainable transport solution as a cornerstone of its ongoing sustainability endeavors.

The strategic collaboration between DB Schenker and Hapag-Lloyd has resulted in a groundbreaking agreement that focuses on the adoption of low-emission container transports using waste- and residue-based biofuels. By the end of 2023 itself, DB Schenker aims to achieve a remarkable reduction of approximately 3,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, primarily through the integration of at least 1,000 tonnes of pure biofuel.

Henrik Schilling, Managing Director Global Commercial Development at Hapag-Lloyd, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership, stating, “We are excited about this new partnership with DB Schenker as we share the common goal of making logistics more sustainable. Collaborations like these set a clear signal in the industry and are another example of a step-by-step approach to further decarbonize supply chains.”

The Ship Green product introduced by Hapag-Lloyd introduces a groundbreaking solution for customers seeking to mitigate their environmental impact during ocean transports. By utilizing biofuels, customers have the opportunity to seamlessly incorporate Ship Green as an additional service to their existing bookings, effectively reducing CO2e emissions associated with their shipments. Employing the innovative “Book & Claim” chain of custody approach, Hapag-Lloyd can accurately attribute emission reductions to all ocean-leg transports, regardless of vessel type or route. Ship Green accommodates various types of shipments, including those containing standard, hardtop, or tank equipment. This move underscores Hapag-Lloyd’s unwavering commitment to achieving climate-neutral fleet operations by the year 2045.

Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight at DB Schenker, echoed the sentiment, affirming, “I am very pleased that together with Hapag-Lloyd we are setting another example for sustainability in our industry. This partnership further enlarges our global biofuel offer in ocean freight. With this commitment, we are one step closer to our goal of becoming carbon-neutral.”

The partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and DB Schenker gives a bright signal from the shipping industry’s evolving landscape, with a growing emphasis on sustainable practices and a concerted effort to minimize its carbon footprint. As the world seeks innovative solutions to address the challenges of climate change, collaborations of this nature are expected to pave the way for more profound transformations in the realm of supply chain logistics. In addition to biofuels, trends in carbon emissions reduction within the shipping space encompass the development of advanced propulsion technologies, such as hydrogen fuel cells and wind-assisted propulsion systems. In addition, the integration of data-driven optimization strategies for route planning and vessel efficiency is poised to play a pivotal role in revolutionizing the industry’s approach to emissions reduction.
